  SOUTH WALES VOICE SATURDAY 10th MAY 1941 INQUEST: It was stated at the inquest held last Friday on Mrs Gwyneth Evans, four Vine Lane Ystalyfera and her three children Maergwyn, aged four years; Ann aged two years; and William aged nine months; that death was due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Their bodies were found in the debris of their home which was destroyed by fire, as reported in our last week’s issue. The jury, the foreman of which was Mr William Jones, returned a verdict that death case was caused by carbon monoxide poisoning due to misadventure. The coroner was Mr C J C Wilson Swansea. Mr Stanley Alexander, Ystalyfera represented the owner and the Tawe Valley Gas Company. Also present was superintendent Alfred R Williams, Gowerton, Inspector William Folland, Pontardawe, Detective Constable John Rees and Mr B Islwyn Phillips, engineer of Pontardawe Rural Council. Sgt W H James was the coroner’s officer. HUSBAND’S EVIDENCE Evidence of identification was given by Rees Thomas Evans. He said he left home at 630am on the day of the tragedy to go to work at the Yniscedwyn colliery. He was a little later than usual - about 15 minutes. He wrote to work on a cycle as he had no money to go by bus he was late because he had to pump the tyres of the site. The gas stove was not used for cooking the breakfast - water was warmed on the fire stop the house comprised three rooms - and the family all slept in one room. The house was condemned but he went into it, as he could not get other accommodation. He had written twice to the gas company complaining of leakage of gas in the slot meter and the stove. The smell of gas was very bad on the morning of the tragedy. He first complained to the company several months ago. When he left for work his wife was going upstairs will stop he and his wife lived happily together. His theory was that his wife used the stove to warm milk for the baby as the fire had been banked up and this might have caused the fire. Beyond this he could say nothing. His wife was in the habit of going to bed after seeing him off to work. Dr A F Sladden, pathologist at Swansea Hospital, gave evidence of conducting post-mortem examinations and described the condition of the bodies. Death in each case was due to carbon monoxide poisoning and any burns that were found occurred after death. In reply to questions, Dr Sladden said that blood tests proved that there was a high percentage of gas in the bodies. Death would occur very quickly in view of the proportion of gas. Sydney Fennell, chief officer of the Pontardawe Fire Brigade said the call was received at 6 50 am and the brigade arrived at 7 pm. Entry could not be gained into the house then: when he got in he noticed the smell of gas. It came from the vicinity of the meter. The fire might have caused the leakage by fracturing a pipe. There were fresh coals on the fire. He did not think the fire was due to anything arising from the fireplace. A dropped match or cigarette on the carpet might have caused the fire; but there must have been a quick and sudden blaze. Questioned by the foreman, the husband (recalled) said he did not strike a match that morning. There were no clothes about the fireplace when he left home. By superintendent: Chief Officer Fennell said the body of the baby was found at the bottom of the stairs near the gas stove. The mother’s body was found in the centre of the kitchen: the other two bodies were alongside. The bodies had fallen through the floor, and they were covered by portions of the featherbed. In reply to the coroner: if the leakage of gas occurred before the fire, it might have been the cause of the fire. One could have expected and minor explosion the fire ignited the gas. said the call was received at 6 50 am and the brigade arrived at 7 pm. CAUSE OF DEATH Dr Mark Goldberg, Godre’rgraig said on external examination he found no marks on the bodies other than burns. In his opinion death in every case was due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Joseph Raymond Gape, 26 Graig y Merched Ystalyfera, said as he left his house he saw smoke coming from the roof of Evans’s house. He called his father and brother. The door was closed and burning and so was the window. He could not see inside the house as the place was full of smoke. The door was burst open; he went for a ladder and placed it against the upstairs window. He saw the bedroom floor collapse. He did not detect a smell of gas. Mrs Annie Cook, 3 Vine Lane Ystalyfera, said that shortly before 7 am she was awakened by a banging on the door of her house. She got up and found smoking house and she and her family left. She did not notice the smell of gas. By Mr Alexander: she had not noticed gas leakage in the three months she had lived there. By Superintendent Williams: Mrs Evans had not complained to her of gas escaping in the house. Arthur George Lofthouse, manager of the Tawe Valley Gas Company said one of his collectors told him that Evans refused to allow her to remove the money from the meter, as there was a leakage in the house, and as he did not use the cooker. The collector had not reported the matter to him until that morning. He had no recollection of receiving letters from Evans complaining of leakage of gas. Summarising the evidence, the coroner commented upon the difficulty of deciding on the cause of the fire. It might well have happened that the mother tried to warm some milk for her baby and that an explosion occurred which caused the fire, but they could not jump to conclusions without there being proof. The coroner complemented the chief officer and the fire brigade upon their smart responses and also said the relatives would know that the victims did not suffer the agonies of burning.   SOUTH WALES VOICE SATURDAY 1st MARCH 1947 AN INQUEST ON YSTALYFERA MAN FOUND HANGING This is a most unhappy case. This poor man worried himself to death in grieving for his wife, and from this fact that he was alone, although he had cheerful companions living in the same house, I have the greatest sympathy for his son, especially as he was home at the time, commented Mr C J C Wilson, West Glamorgan Coroner recording a verdict of death to asphyxia caused by hanging, self inflicted, while the balance of his mind was disturbed, at the inquest at Ystalyfera on Wednesday, On Thomas John Thomas aged 68 of 66 Alltygrug Road Ystalyfera, who was found hanged at his home early on Monday morning. Daniel Thomas 22 W Shepton Shepton Mallet Somerset, Son of the deceased, stated that last weekend he was home with his father for a short visit. his father, a retired colliery surface worker, having given up work owing to ill health shortly before his 65th birthday, had been very grieved since the death of his wife, last October. witness said he was roused at about 8:00 on Monday morning by Mrs Bould, who looked after his father, and as a result of what she told him, went upstairs immediately, he found his father hanging by a cord in the glass. House. which adjoined the scullery. A chair was lying on its side, nearby. Dr G E David stated that the deceased was a patient under his care since last September, and added that nothing he had been able to do prevented the deceased from being depressed over his wife's death when he saw the deceased at about 8:30 on Monday morning he estimated that he had been dead for about an hour to an hour and a half. Mrs Bessie Bould, who with her husband resides at 66 Alltygrug Road and looked after the deceased, stated that, since his wife died. The deceased always kept saying that he wished he was dead. when she drew the curtains of the scullery window on Monday morning. She was confronted with the deceased hanging in the Glass House.
